The Wheeler Lab

Welcome to our lab.

The Wheeler Lab is based in the department of Clinical Infection, Microbiology and Immunology (CIMI) at the University of Liverpool (UK) and specialises in bacterial behaviour and physiology.

Together with our collaborators, we explore the fascinating world of bacteria to understand how we can minimise the bad, and maximise the good that bacteria can do for our health and planet.

Our Research Focus

The group has a broad interest in bacterial behaviour and physiology, with a particular focus on biofilm formation and antibiotic resistance.

Dr Wheeler has helped to develop cutting-edge assays for following bacterial movement and behaviour during biofilm formation, and these form the basis for much of the lab’s work. Our diverse and  interdisciplinary approach combines microfluidics, high-resolution microscopy, massively parallel cell-tracking and molecular microbiology.
