The university announced the appointment of their first cohort of fellows, a scheme which attracted a broad range of candidates from around the globe, with over 600 applications received. After a collaborative cross-faculty recruitment process, Dr Wheeler became one of just seven new University fellows who were invited to take up their posts in the academic year (2024-25).

Dr Wheeler will join the University's Department of Clinical Infection, Microbiology and Immunology. The programme forms part of the University’s commitment to developing early career researchers outlined in their Strategy 2031.

Vice Chancellor Professor Tim Jones said: “A very warm welcome to all our new Fellows.  As a key component of Liverpool 2031, our fellowship scheme will unlock world-class research potential and support our strategic ambitions.  We are committed to providing development and support along the fellowship journey so that world-class research thrives here at Liverpool.”
